“For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” (Ps 100:5)
This verse has come to mind countless times over the last few weeks, especially the first part. “The Lord is good.” We can always use that reminder, but it seems to be especially timely for a prolonged period of….well, mostly controlled chaos, really. (You can substitute “barely” for “mostly” there, and it’s still rather accurate most days.) In the midst of a pandemic that has touched my family personally, in the aftermath of a bitterly contested election, when even church – a much-relied-upon source of comfort, routine, and stability – looks vastly different from what we’ve been accustomed to in recent years, when all I know for certain about my life a year from now is that it’s going to differ drastically from my life today……in the midst of all that, yet the Lord is good.
Too, I appreciate the time perspective in this verse. The steadfast love of the Lord – His covenant-keeping love – endures forever. He has been faithful throughout all prior generations, and will continue to be faithful throughout all coming generations. Every. Single. One.
The Lord’s goodness, covenant-keeping love, and enduring faithfulness are all reasons why we should praise Him. That’s really the rest of the chapter: Gladly give thanks to the Lord and serve Him with praise, not because circumstances are always great and we can clearly see the next ten steps of the path ahead of us, but because He is good. That’s something of which we should always be mindful.
On the way to work this morning I heard Jeremy Camp “Keep Me In the Moment”. The song reminds me that not to think of the mistakes in the past or worry about the uncertain future but “keep me in the moment cause I don’t want to miss what you have for me”. The Lords love endures forever each and every moment of our lives. In all of the past, present and future generations, He was, is and will forever be faithful.
