My private devotion time recently has taken me into the minor prophets, and I was struck by one verse in particular.
Joel 3:16: “The Lord roars from Zion, and utters His voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake. But the Lord is a refuge to His people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.”
The broader context of the chapter deals with the Lord judging the nations for their sins, but the contrast in this particular verse was stunning. The Lord roars against the pagan nations – those who have sinned against His people – and His voice causes the heavens and the earth to quake. This is true power, exercised in righteous anger and judgment; and those who dwell in rebellion against the Lord do well to tremble. But this same power is exercised in protection and defense of those who seek refuge in Him. He is a refuge and a stronghold, a place of safety. Those who fear the Lord can rest in the knowledge that they are sheltered and covered by Him.
I find this to be both a caution and encouragement. A caution to examine my own heart, and ask the Lord to reveal areas in which I am living in rebellion. But an encouragement too, because I know whom I have believed, and I know where my refuge is, and I can trust that nothing that is not ordained by the good Lord, He who abounds in steadfast love and faithfulness, will invade the stronghold of His protection.
Thank you for highlighting that verse! Powerful words and a comfort.
