It’s fitting, I think, that Christmas comes so closely on the heels of the winter solstice. We celebrate the birth of Jesus just days after the literal darkest day of the year. I don’t know what this year has held for you. It may be that this has been a dark year, a dark month, a dark season, whatever stretch of time you have in mind. But Jesus breaks through the spiritual, emotional, mental darkness with the light of hope, brighter than the dawn.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:1-5)
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. (Isaiah 9:2)
The people who walked in darkness have indeed seen a great light. May that light shine into your life as well.
